Holy Cows: George W Bush - buffoon or great leader?
By Sameh El-Shahat

Sameh El-Shahat argues that George W Bush has been the most under-rated president... ever.

So, the hot news now is Barack Obama.

Obama this, Obama that... Naturally, it is very laudable that the United States may have chosen to look beyond the issue of race and opted for a person purely on the merit of his character. But what will they find?

advertisementThe usual hot air that Washington politicians seem to have made their own. Mr Obama is no different. We’re just too politically correct to say that the only thing refreshing about him is his colour. So we say he’s "bipartisan", or he’s a "uniter".

Whatever happened to leadership and honesty as presidential traits? I happen to believe that the only leader in the West to have these two admirable qualities in droves is the leader of the free world: George W Bush.

Yes, we’ve all heard the Bushisms and laughed at them but do you really think somebody supposedly that thick can make it to the top of the most sophisticated political system the world has ever seen?

No, and that is because Mr Bush is far cleverer than most of his predecessors. He may not have been a Rhodes Scholar, but he has the ability to reach out to his people and read them.

Take the Iraq war for example. OK, so he got us into Iraq in the first place. But for Pete’s sake, he’s the leader of the world’s only superpower. He needs to take decisions, even if sometimes they have nasty consequences - which is far better than we do in Europe, where we enjoy dithering not as a means to an end, but as an end in itself.

Something had to be done about Iraq and our government was all for attacking it too. So let’s not blame G.W. for the war.

And when things did go wrong in Iraq, and there were calls to pull out, Mr Bush just followed his own counsel and doubled his bet with the Surge.

And he was right because Iraq is in a relatively better shape today than it ever was and Al Qa'eda is a shadow of its former self in that country.

This is a man who has the courage of his convictions.

Let’s not forget how Europe does wars.

Usually we wait and wait until the enemy starts attacking, then we let them win a bit, then we fight until we are tired, then we just call the US to come over to clean our mess.

That is what happened in WWI, WWII, and the Balkans.

Bush is just showing us what a bunch of dangerous ditherers we are and we hate him for it. Naturally.

And the Olympics. Bush said right from the beginning that he’s going to the opening ceremony because he saw the whole boycott thing as silly and counterproductive.

Compare that with Sarkozy who has changed his mind twice so far and to Gordon Brown who, well... err.

Not much leadership from Europe here, as usual, just doublespeak. Once again, it is to Bush that we look for leadership.

Bush may not have the slickness of his predecessor, but he is a man you can trust and who prefers to tell it like it is.

This is refreshing, and very scary for us who are used to our politicians always talking grandly about principles and hiding behind political mumbo-speak.

The fact is you guys hate Mr Bush because he is not a hypocrite and you are used to hypocrites as your leaders. We hate what we don’t understand.

Yes, yes, all you bleeding heart liberals are cringing out there. I can just hear you. But the fact is, Mr Bush has had to take some very tough decisions and the world needs people who can not only talk but also act tough and admit mistakes.

Of course you think Mr Obama is going to make a difference, but as I write this, he’s already giving all the signs of somebody who will say anything to get into power only to act in exactly the same way as the Washington clique he aims to replace!

Hating George W. Bush is not only dull and unoriginal, but it shows a complete lack of understanding of the world in which we live in.

You want liberty but you don’t want to defend it... right.

And for those of you who still don’t buy into what I’m saying, look at the Middle East. Bush single-handedly managed to unite the Arabs in their hate for him.

Given how difficult uniting the Arabs is, it takes a special man with special skills to achieve this. He is just the kind of man to bring about peace in that region!

My usual caution is to give it a couple of decades. Jury is still out on whether W is a hero or a goat.

Fair enough. But it's also fair to point out that we are generally in a FAR better place than we might otherwise have been, and that W's leadership has been a critical element of that. That may not constitute a legacy of greatness, but it is AT LEAST one of fairly consistent pretty-goodness. When I compare that to what we could have expected from Gore or Kerry, I'm more than satisfied.

I don't think the question should be buffoon or great leader, it should be what

went wrong with American's attitude towards politics. From what I can tell,

Democrats believe their political leaders should be the most intellectual, most

qualified people for the job to decide how to direct society. Republicans believe,

we don't care how qualified the Democrat's politician is, we don't want anyone

making decisions for me. Both make sense and it seems within societies throughout

history, about half the people think one way and about half the other, so a perfect

system for a basic 2 party system. So these two types of politicians debate and

come up with the best solutions for a country. Why did it get personal? Why do

politicians try to sabatage each other's effort instead of focusing on what's best

for the country. Why would anyone call our president a buffoon? Why would my own

nephew look at me with such contempt when he calls me a liberal? When are we all

going to realize we are just Americans with different points of view. For that

matter, when are we going to realize we are all just people around the world.

Criticize Europeans? Robert my ol ex relative, I happen to really like Europeans

as well. I do know just how sharp and thoughtful you are, you know I'm not

really slamming you, just saying hello after all these years and btw, wishing Beverly would email me at bixmoe45@fastmail.fm. I thought Jason was such an independant little guy, he'd even think differently than you. Oh well .

Joe--

You might be surprised at the ACTUAL differences in how Robert and I think. Consider that your observation may be entirely a matter of perspective: perhaps your thought processes are SO far from ours that, from where you stand, it's hard to tell the difference.

It's a valid point that we are all--mostly, anyway--"just Americans with different points of view."

But here's the problem: I can live according to MY view of the world without impacting YOU at all. I don't want to tell you how to live your life. I don't want to tell you what car to drive, or what you can or can't carry in your pockets, or what you have to teach your kids. I CERTAINLY have no interest in spreading your wealth around, such as it is.

You, on the other hand--inasmuch as you are a classic American liberal along the lines of Bill Clinton or Barack Obama--you simply CANNOT have society ordered according to your desires without crossing the line between your stuff and MY stuff.

So, you see, the moral equivalence you present is a complete illusion. Our perspectives CAN'T have equal validity, because they are MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.

In fact, it is the very notion of moral equivalence that eats at the Constitutional foundation of the set of liberties that YOU call one option among many, but I call the essence of what it is to be American.

I will not get into this debate. I used to and I was horrified by how viscious they can become. I will not change your mind nor will you change mine. I'm not saying you will get nasty, but someone will. It's why I started focusing on pointing out how personal this stuff can get instead of presenting an arguement. Elections are won or lost based on fence straddlers, although I pride myself on always studying the candidates and not just voting party line. When I was in college, I subscribed to radical right and radical left publications. It made for interesting reading and probably confused the hell out of the FBI. If you really dig in, for every arguement you present on one side of the political view, you will find just as valid opposing view.

I went to a lecture once and the first thing he did, was turn out all the lights. By the podium was a window frame with a light shining on it. He asked people to pay attention to how the window moved. Afterwards, he asked how many people saw the window go round and round. How many people saw the window go halfway around then reverse. About half of the people saw each. He said it had to do with your environment as a child. Now image that everyone in your village, because the same environmental conditions saw it go the same way. In the neighboring village, they saw it go the other way. Eventually, since everyone you knew saw it go the same way and everyone in the other village saw it the other way, the logical assumption was, each thought the other crazy and should be killed off.

I don't care which way you think. But since I still care very much about your family, I do care that you never become narrow minded.

I commented here, only because I spotted the name and my motive was this link be sent to your aunt Beverly. Would you please do that for me as a favor?

Thank you Jason. It was an exciting surprise for me to see the Williscroft name.

Joe
