Menu Foods Income Fund of Ontario, Canada yesterday issued a recall of over 80 brands of wet "chunk and gravy" style dog and cat food, sold throughout the United States and Canada.

The recalled food is canned or packaged in foil pouches. It was sold throughout the United States and Canada between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007.

According to Menu Foods' March 16 Press Release, no animals in Canada became ill from their food. The AP reports:

an unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food.

The suspect cause is wheat gluten provided by a specific supplier that Menu Foods no longer uses.

Menu Foods Income Fund manufactures dog and cat food for 17 of the top 20 North American pet food retailers, including Wal-Mart, Safeway, and Kroger. It also manufactures food on contract for other companies including:

  • Protor & Gamble, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. of Topeka, Kansas
  • Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, part of Nestlé SA of Vevey, Switzerland

These companies have issued their own recalls on the heels of Menu Foods'. The following is a list of recalled brands, linked to detailed recall information. Check back for updates.
